What is Experience Camps?
Experience Camps is an award-winning national nonprofit that transforms the lives of grieving children through summer camp programs and innovative, year-round initiatives. Through compassion, connection, and play, we allow grieving children to embody a life full of hope and possibility. By amplifying their voices, we are creating a more grief-sensitive culture.

Why it matters
Approximately 6.3 million children in the U.S. will experience the death of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver by the time they turn 18. Grieving youth are more likely to endure mental health challenges, poor academic performance, and negative long-term physical and financial outcomes than their non-grieving peers. Left unaddressed, childhood grief can undermine a child’s future.

Next up on our trip through Japan…Izu!

A peninsula south of Tokyo, Izu is known for its beaches, hiking, and seafood. We spent a day relaxing in the sun and water at Yumigahama beach just before a typhoon landed. The water felt soooo good with the outside temp in the high 90s! We went for a six mile run to explore the area and got in some serious 🥵 training.

The ryokan we stayed at was a family run operation that provided shuttle service to the beach and train station. The shared baths were immaculate and I liked the stones lining the outdoor bathing pool. The owner’s sister had a restaurant across the river that had great food too!

It’s a solid four hour train ride to Tokyo so with a bit of navigation you can explore a more rustic side of Japan.

First day or so in Kyoto, Japan. We visited the classics and a few off the beaten path. I encourage you to walk around and explore areas near the popular tourist sites. You’ll be surprised at the hidden gems.

We went to Arashiyama for the bamboo forests AND kept exploring the entire park for additional view and less crowded walkways. The nearby Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple has a much smaller bamboo walkway but more interesting temple and more local streets and restaurants to walk around eat.

The final clip is the sound of cicadas that filled the air.
